Last Sunday May 8th Reardens Bar took on St Finbarr’s in a 1916 Exhibition Match. Emulating the Cork and Tipperary 1916 Munster Final the two teams lined out for a commemorative match with Reardens lining out in the replica 1916 Cork gear and the ‘barrs in 1916 replica Tipperary gear.

The match was played under 1916 rules with 1916 style Hurleys which proved to be an interesting challenge for the players as many elements are vastly different from today’s rules. Maybe the biggest difference was that the game had to be played completely through ground hurling, a task which the players enjoyed.

Thankfully on the day we only required the medics once for one minor injury which was quickly seen to. It was a hard fought match but the Cork side prevailed on the day taking home the victory!

The game was followed by a reception in the clubhouse with everyone enjoying food and drinks until the late hours.

We’d like to thank everyone at St. Finbarr’s Hurling and Football Club for all of their help in putting this game together. There was a great turn out on the day and the exhibition match really highlighted how far the game of Hurling has progressed.

On last Sunday, 10th April we were proud to host a memorial for the late John Egan who passed away on 8th April 2012. John was a legendary Kerry footballer who won six All-Irelands for his county along with numerous All Star Awards.

During the memorial, friends and sporting colleagues including Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh shared stories and reminisced on John’s finest achievements and some of their personal memories of a great man. Speakers included Paul Montgomery of Reardens Group, Mickey Ned O’Sullivan, Jimmy Deenihan, Jerry Buttimer and many other Kerry legends.

We at Reardens Bar would like to extend our sincere gratitude to John’s family (His wife Mary, Son John Jr and Daughter Mairin) for so kindly allowing us to display irreplaceable memorabilia from through the years belonging to John. It was amazing to see his numerous All Ireland Medals, All Star Awards and various jerseys along with photos from throughout the years detailing his great GAA career.

A special thank you is also extended to all of those who spoke at the event, especially all who travelled from Co. Kerry including Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh. The weather may have been dreadful on the day but it was heart-warming to see everyone pull together to pay tribute to one of the greats. Go raibh míle maith agat do gach duine as teacht!
